Social media, is it destroying our social lives?

Does anyone here think that social media is taking away from our actual social lives? It seems like people aren't social anymore and focus mostly on social networking sites. I was wondering, does anyone here stick to their PCs instead of going to a social gathering?

I seem to be on social media much more than I go to other places.

Brem, I think it's a serious problem with people now a days and one that I caught myself starting to become a victim of until I was able to put life and the internet into the proper perspective. I laugh to my self when I go out to dinner and every member of the family at the next table is looking down at their mobile devices. It's insane and a bit sad.  I stopped using facebook for the most part with a once a week check in. I never used twitter, instagram or snapchat. The same for video games, My GF's  kid who is a 20 yo male stays in his PJ's all day and night behind closed doors in his room playing LOL with an occasional pop out to the bathroom and back into his room. I mean, at that age, I used to be out hanging with my friends every night, even if we just hung around at someones house or went out looking for girls.  I am an avid video gamer but I make sure I spend my time playing games when it's the least intrusive on my social life and others if at all possible.

I think for some it can truly destroy a life in terms of what they're doing with their social lives. I know I try to see friends in person instead of online, but sometimes it's just easier to chat with a friend on Facebook as sometimes it's not possible to see them in person all the time.

I think some people need to cut out the social media and actually meet new people too.

The only good thing about facebook is that you can rekindle old friendships with people that are living in other parts of the country or world for that matter that you would not have been able to do otherwise, That is a positve that I can attrribute to facebook. My friggin sister PM's me on facebook to tell me my father is in the hospital....WTF??? Ummmm, she's PM ing me on her damn phone and doesn't bother to call me? That's what I'm talking about....

I try not to even bother with social networking these days. I had a facebook, but I decided to close it because I didn't want to deal with it. I talk to my friends on my phone and that's fine with me. I agree that it has kind of killed the social world we once lived in. More people are anti social than ever.

I hate when people are on their phones so darn much. Everytime a friend's over, they're on their phone. When I'm watching a movie or show with a friend, on their phone. I don't even own a phone, so I'm proud of that. And if I did I doubt I'd be on it 24/7 like some are.

I only use facebook these days to talk to a couple friends. I don't even bother with most of my other friends as I never converse with them.

But, I still use my PC more than I go out into the real world, and I need to get out of that habit.

This is why I decided to be done with social media for the most part. I still have Facebook, but it's only for personal family & Friends and I only use it to chat with them. I never post pictures or anything on it though.
