Torment: Tides Of Numenera is an isometric turn-based cRPG developed by InXile Entertainment as the spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment. The game was successfully crowdfunded via Kickstarter in April, 2013. It met its $900,000 goal in less than 6 hours and set new records for fastest Kickstarter project ever to reach $1 million and the highest crowdfunded video game project. Ultimately, the game raised a total of $4,188,927 from 74,405 backers.
Torment uses the Numenera game system, designed by Monte Cook, rather than the Dungeons & Dragons license that Planescape used. Although the game will feature turn-based combat, story will be the much greater focus. The game has always been intended to be text-heavy, as Planescape was. Torment's script eventually grew to more than one million words, which exceeds Planescape's roughly 900,000 words. Torment's story has been described as being philosophical, deeply personal, and rich with choice and consequence. Limited voice acting will be employed to give individual characters their own definitive voices while avoiding the financially and logistically prohibitive costs of full voice acting for an indie game with so much writing.
The game is powered by the Unity game engine and shares the technology and tools developed by Obsidian Entertainment for Pillars of Eternity. Chris Avellone, the lead writer and designer of Planescape, will contribute his writing to Torment per a stretch goal. Additionally, Mark Morgan, Planescape's original composer, will return to contribute music to Torment. The game was initially slated for released in December, 2014, according to the original Kickstarter pitch, but its release date has been pushed back multiple times, eventually settling on February 28, 2017.
On August 4, 2016, inXile and publisher Techland announced that the game would also be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. These versions of the game will first be shown publicly at Gamescom 2016. They are to be released simultaneously with the PC version.
