Armello is a digital board game where the players control an animal character from one of the four different clans who are fighting to become king. They move around on hexagonal tiles and complete quests, explore ruins and get into combat with the other players. They can use cards to performs spells, play tricks on the other players or equip themselves with gear to help them claim the crown. The games are short and follow traditional board game mechanics with moving game pieces and rolling dice.
Armello is a 4 player game, players take it in turns and are given 3 action points (AP) to move across the board during their turn.
The goal of the game is to become the new King or Queen of Armello. The current King is infected with Rot and is slowly dieing, the King will lose 1 health at the start of each new day. The players are competing with each other to defeat the King or become prestigious enough to be elected as the new King or Queen.
At the start of the game each player picks one of the 3 available quest, a quest marker will appear on a random tile on the board that the player must reach to continue the quest. Reaching the quest marker will give the player a safe and a risky option, the risky option will have a chance for the player to gain an item or a new party member but also have a risk of losing either health or prestige.
Players continue taking turns as they try to achieve one of the four methods of winning the game:
If a player moves onto the same tile as another character or NPC then they will initiate combat with them.
Every player has a body stat that directly translates to their health points. Players also have a fight stat which represents how many dice a player takes into combat. The are other methods of getting extra dice by burning cards in your hands, equipping items that give you extra dice, or via passive abilities certain players might have.
Each player rolls their set of dice which have 6 sides; attack, defend, sun, moon, wild, miss.
If the die lands on an attack or defend symbol that die will be added to their respective attack or defend stat for this battle. If the die lands on sun or moon then depending on what part of the day/night cycle the game is currently in then they will either get an extra attack point or it will count as a miss. If the die lands on wild then the dice will be re-rolled. If the die is a miss then nothing will happen.
Once all the die have been rolled the players attack each other, the number of attack points will first reduce the opponents defence points, once they are depleted any excess attack points will directly damage the opponent.
Once the fight is over the health is removed from the characters, if a character takes more damage then their opponent but still survives the encounter then they will be pushed back to a different title. If a character loses all their health they will die and respawn back at their starting camp and lose one of their prestige points.
