Mass Effect: Andromeda is an action role-playing video game developed by BioWare Montreal, BioWare Edmonton and BioWare Austin, and published by Electronic Arts. The game is scheduled for release in North America on March 21, 2017 and in Europe on March 23, 2017. Mass Effect: Andromeda will be the fourth main entry in the Mass Effect franchise.
Mass Effect: Andromeda, while not a direct sequel to 2012's Mass Effect 3, takes place 600 years after the events of the original trilogy. The player assumes the role of an Andromeda Initiative recruit: Sara or Scott Ryder, as they embark on a journey to find a new habitable planet in the Heleus cluster within the Andromeda galaxy. The game has similar open world elements to BioWare's Dragon Age: Inquisition.
Unlike the original trilogy, which was built using Epic Games' Unreal Engine, Mass Effect: Andromeda utilizes the EA DICE's Frostbite engine. Mac Walters, the co-lead writer of Mass Effect 2 and the lead writer of Mass Effect 3, served as the creative director for Mass Effect: Andromeda. Additionally, Ian Frazier a designer who prominently worked on Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning served as the lead designer of Mass Effect: Andromeda.
