Devil Daggers was inspired by first-person shooter and arcade games from the 1990s. It's designed to be a laser-focused experience where players will struggle to stay alive while fighting horrifying skull monsters on a small platform suspended in an abyss. Players are armed with magic daggers they can fire in an endless stream by holding down the left mouse button, or can be fired in a shotgun-like burst by clicking once. Like Quake, Devil Daggers features a versatile movement system allowing for circle strafing, bunny hopping, and "dagger jumps".
The game's aesthetic is very reminiscent of Quake, in that it features gothic, hellish monsters with unfiltered textures and polygon jitter. It's also worth noting that Sorath built the engine from the ground up.
Devil Daggers features an integrated leaderboard system where players can quickly watch replays of any player's run.
There are 13 unique enemies in Devil Daggers, each with a distinct appearance and movement pattern.
The first 'enemy' encountered, the spire spawns enemies and features a single red gem. It spawns Skull I and a single Skull II. Must shoot the red gem to kill it.
These are the regular small skulls that spawn from both Squid I and Squid II. They float towards the player and can be outrun by circle strafing.
A horned skull, these wander seemingly without direction, although they respond to player projectiles and will maneuver out of the way. They drop a red gem as well.
A large spider-like creature that sucks the red gems from the board towards them. Each gem eaten will spew forth a Spider Egg, and if given enough time will pop and spawn Spiderlings. Shoot above the red gem to kill it.
A green ball containing Spiderlings. Will hatch after a set amount of time.
Tiny green spiders with skulls on them that skitter around the board.
The second type of spawner, these feature two gems at opposite ends of each other and both must be shot out to kill it. Spawns Skull I and Skull III
A variant of the horned skull, Skull III has bigger and curvier horns. They will aggressively pursue the player, potentially running them down. A perfect circle strafe or bunny hopping can outrun it, although they should be killed as soon as possible.
A large bone centipede will burst forth from the ground and on its underbelly there will be a number of red gems. The player must shoot them all for it to despawn. It will slowly chase the player however will submerge if the player passes underneath the centipede's body at any time.
An even larger metal centipede that has dozens of red gems. More aggressive than Centipede I, they can wrap around and dive into the player.
"Boss" that spawns in the middle of the board at 400s.
