Dead Island Riptide is a spin-off of Dead Island developed by Techland. It is of note that publisher Deep Silver emphasizes that this is not a proper sequel.
Riptide will allow for character-stat imports from the original game and will focus again more on the close quarters combat instead of shooting guns. It will be set in a different section of Banoi than the original Dead Island. The engine has seen some improvements and among those are new weather effects and flooding technology. At one point players will have to travel on small boats and fight off zombies in the water. There will also be forts that need to be barricaded or reinforced and defended. It has been revealed that the same four playable characters from the original game ( Sam B, Logan Carter, Xian Mei, and Purna) will return as playable characters in the sequel, as well as a new fifth playable character (see further down).
The game is set for release in the US on April 23rd 2013 for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and in other territories on April 26th.
On November 5th 2012 Deep Silver revealed the name and backstory to the fifth playable character, John Morgan. John is a US Navy guy, with expertise in hand-to-hand combat. Before the events of Riptide, John's US Navy career took a wrong turn, and he was working as a cook on a military ship.
