Call of Duty: Black Ops II is a first-person shooter developed by Treyarch and published by Activision (Square Enix in Japan). It was released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on November 13, 2012, and for the Wii U on November 18th. Black Ops II is the sequel to 2010's Call of Duty: Black Ops. The game is set in the 1980's (via flashbacks), and the year 2025, an age in which modern military equipment has been largely overtaken by drone technology operated remotely.
The player mostly takes on the role of David Mason, son of Alex Mason, the main protagonist of the original Black Ops. The younger Mason seeks to hunt down Raoul Menendez, who it seems is stirring up a cold war between the US and China over precious minerals. Menendez has also seized control of some of the US Military's technology and has set it against them, with Los Angeles as one of the battlegrounds. Alex Mason is also playable in certain missions that take place in the past.
Black Ops II includes branching story lines, nonlinear gameplay, the return of the "Zombies" campaign, and multiplayer that fully integrates with Call of Duty Elite.
The soundtrack for the game was recorded by Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor and Jack Wall, who worked on the Mass Effect franchise.
Black Ops II's campaign plays between the Mason family of Alex and his son David, taking place in the 1980's and 2025 respectively. Alex Mason's missions play out via flashbacks through the perspective of an aged Frank Woods, while David's missions take place in the present. The campaign is the first in the series to introduce customizable loadouts for the player, and allows for control of squads in certain missions. The player will have access to futuristic weapons for David, and weapons from the original Black Ops for Alex, with a few additions. David also has access to many futuristic gadgets such as "nanogloves" used for climbing, a gliding suit, x-ray sight attachments, cloaking suits, and many others.
The multiplayer takes place in 2025, and introduces many new aspects to the series, such as a fully customizable loadouts running on a "Pick-Ten" system, giving the player up to 10 slots in choosing between primary weapons, secondary weapons, perks, attachments and equipment, though they stay within the general structure of the old games. Wildcard slots are available to break the norm, and have changes in the structure of the loadout (eg, two slot 1 perks, ability to hold 2 primaries, etc). Most of the weapons are brand new to the series, many falling in the standard categories of assault rifles, sub-machine guns, sniper rifles, shotguns, light machine guns, launchers, pistols and revolvers. New equipment and attachments are also added to the game.
There are 55 levels per prestige in Black Ops II. All weapons and equipment are available by using unlock tokens, which players receive every time they level up. They are used to buy and unlock all the slots, as well as weapon attachments, that are unlocked when the weapon levels up. Unlocks to the weapon are kept, even when the player enters prestige rankings, in order to unlock all the attachments for all weapons, perks and equipment.
The new “scorestreak” system replaces the old “killstreak” one, which grants players different supports and abilities based on the player's score per life.
Black Ops II includes the standard Survival Zombie mode and also introduces two more modes.
In zombie maps, the player starts the game with an M1911 and must fight off zombies in rounds in order to gain points. They can use the points to buy weapons, perks and unlock doors. Players can also use items they find around the map and build them to make different items such as power generators to operate doors and machines, deployable shields and other attributes (Tranzit only). Zombie mode uses a combination of the weapons and power-ups from Black Ops as well as the future weapons from Black Ops II with the addition of new "Wonder Weapons.” New to Zombies is the ability to "save" progress in the unlocking of secrets and building certain items. Also, it is now possible, by the use of a "bank system", to store points for a small fee, and then use them in later games. Weapons can also be stored and kept across games by this manner.
Zombies are able to jump, climb, and will pursue the player incessantly. New creatures added include a fog monster, which latches onto the player and reduces their vision. They are found in the hazy areas between each section of the map. Another new addition is of an electric being who randomly spawns and attacks the player with electricity, and can only be defeated by melee attacks. Certain hidden areas are located in the areas off the standard map areas, and are important for completing the missions given to the player.
Players will also increase in rank while they play, changing their emblem in the process. Zombies mode also tracks statistics across all games.
all the maps to date are available in the tranzit overworld, but can be played individually in survival mode.
these perks are obtained by completing certain conditions in zombie mode matches, and remain with your charcter, even across matches. they are not taken up by a perk slot, but can be lost.
